The London Boroughs Greater London is made up of 33 separate municipalities – 32 London Boroughs and the Corporation of London, which has responsibility for the 'square mile' – the financial heart of London. Each of these local authorities is made up of elected councillors representing wards within the borough, often resulting in a 'cabinet' of members with responsibility for a specific topic area such as transport, education or economic development, led by a Lead Councillor. Each local authority provides services such as education, social services and housing, as well as dealing with planning applications, environmental health and transport. The boroughs are responsible for 95% of London’s road network and deliver programmes such as local safety schemes, increased cycle facilities, workplace and school travel plans, improvements to the streetscape and public transport interchanges, and road / bridge maintenance. These works are all delivered within the framework of a Local Implementation Plan, London's version of a Sustainable Urban Transport Plan, which sets out how each borough will meet their own local transport objectives as well as those set by the Mayor of London.
